Delusion
A fixed, false belief that is resistant to change in light of conflicting evidence. While clinically defined as a symptom of certain mental disorders, in everyday use it describes holding beliefs that are clearly contradicted by reality.
Examples
- Believing you have special powers or a unique mission
- Maintaining a conspiracy theory despite overwhelming contradictory evidence
- Refusing to accept a loved one’s death despite proof
Why It Happens
Delusions can provide comfort, meaning, or a sense of control. They may also result from extreme motivated reasoning where the emotional need to believe something overrides all evidence.
How to Counteract
- Gradually introduce conflicting evidence
- Seek professional help for entrenched beliefs
- Build trust and rapport before challenging beliefs
- Focus on the practical consequences of the belief
