Delusion

A fixed, false belief that is resistant to change in light of conflicting evidence. While clinically defined as a symptom of certain mental disorders, in everyday use it describes holding beliefs that are clearly contradicted by reality.

Examples

  • Believing you have special powers or a unique mission
  • Maintaining a conspiracy theory despite overwhelming contradictory evidence
  • Refusing to accept a loved one’s death despite proof

Why It Happens

Delusions can provide comfort, meaning, or a sense of control. They may also result from extreme motivated reasoning where the emotional need to believe something overrides all evidence.

How to Counteract

  • Gradually introduce conflicting evidence
  • Seek professional help for entrenched beliefs
  • Build trust and rapport before challenging beliefs
  • Focus on the practical consequences of the belief
