Self-Justification

The process of convincing ourselves that our actions or decisions were correct, even when evidence suggests otherwise. It’s closely related to rationalization but focuses specifically on defending our own behavior.

Examples

  • Blaming others for a mistake you made
  • Convinced that your unethical behavior was justified given the circumstances
  • Maintaining a bad relationship because you’ve invested so much time

Why It Happens

Self-justification preserves our self-concept as competent, moral people. It reduces cognitive dissonance between our actions and our beliefs about ourselves.

How to Counteract

  • Reflect honestly on your motives and actions
  • Seek constructive criticism
  • Accept that being wrong is part of learning
  • Focus on growth rather than defending your ego
