Tribalism
The tendency to favor one’s own group over others, leading to biased thinking, prejudice, and irrational judgments. It involves strong loyalty to a particular group, often at the expense of objective evaluation.
Examples
- Political partisans automatically opposing policies from the opposing party
- Sports fans believing referees are biased against their team
- Religious or ethnic groups demonizing outsiders
Why It Happens
Tribalism provides a sense of belonging, identity, and security. It evolved as a survival mechanism, but in modern contexts it can lead to us-vs-them thinking and poor decision-making.
How to Counteract
- Expose yourself to diverse perspectives
- Focus on shared humanity rather than group differences
- Evaluate arguments on their merits, not their source
- Practice empathy and active listening
