Tribalism

The tendency to favor one’s own group over others, leading to biased thinking, prejudice, and irrational judgments. It involves strong loyalty to a particular group, often at the expense of objective evaluation.

Examples

  • Political partisans automatically opposing policies from the opposing party
  • Sports fans believing referees are biased against their team
  • Religious or ethnic groups demonizing outsiders

Why It Happens

Tribalism provides a sense of belonging, identity, and security. It evolved as a survival mechanism, but in modern contexts it can lead to us-vs-them thinking and poor decision-making.

How to Counteract

  • Expose yourself to diverse perspectives
  • Focus on shared humanity rather than group differences
  • Evaluate arguments on their merits, not their source
  • Practice empathy and active listening
